The Joys of Whimsy: Make Your Home More Whimsical
April 14, 2026
Whimsy is a big topic in 2026, although most discussions mainly centred around lifestyle changes, we’re seeing its philosophy shift into home decor as well. Unlike other home decor trends or styles, there is no secret formula or checklist to achieve a whimsical interior. It’s about leaning into authenticity and uniqueness, decorating to add joy into our lives especially in not-so-joyful times. It’s all about letting go of the rules, trends, and worrying about what other people may think. Whimsical decorating doesn’t need a big budget either, it can simply involve layering looks to add interest and draw the eye to unexpected delights. However, whimsy can work best when it is integrated into the overall narrative with each element feeling like they’re part of a larger story.
Today, we’re sharing 5 tips to make your home feel a bit more whimsical and magical.
Go Bold on Colour & Pattern

Some of the easiest ways to add some fun, while still maintaining cohesion, is by using bold paint, patterned wallpaper, and expressive textiles. Although this can feel risky at times, smaller spaces like powder rooms, entryways, and offices are ideal for this kind of whimsical experimentation as you can take the risks without overwhelming the home.
Working with patterns can be intimidating too, especially when using more than one but it’s hard to deny the final effect. If paint feels too bold, clashing patterns can be just as impactful without the commitment. A mix of coloured cushions and a block printed throw is an easy method to lift a neutral sofa (example above). An entryway with a geometric rug or a patterned runner in the hall can instantly bring life back to the space.

Layer in Vintage and One-of-a-Kind Pieces

We’re all about spaces feeling collected rather than curated and nothing delivers individuality quite like vintage or handcrafted pieces. While furniture still needs to be comfortable (whimsy should not overtake functional), you can invite whimsy through shape instead of colour if you want to maintain a minimalistic colour scheme.

Make Small but Impactful Changes

Whimsy doesn’t need a full redesign, often the most effective changes are the most approachable and budget-friendly. Bring new life into a bench or ottoman by reupholstering it in an unexpected fabric. Add humour to a room with cabinet hardware, trays, or pillows. Cheery drapes and window trimmings can add some joy and playfulness, as well as artwork and wall hangings.
Animal motifs add a natural playfulness and charm, and can easily be added with textiles, artworks, throw pillows, and statues. These motifs can involve your own furry friends too – decorate with things they like, for example gallery wall of squirrels or song birds near their food bowl.

Make it Personal

Whimsy can be most effective when it’s deeply personal and rooted in memory, travel, or experience. At it’s very core, whimsy is about connection (to each other and ourselves) so the most successful spaces aren’t just visually interesting but emotionally resonant as well. Add travel souvenirs to the decor, like postcards, tchotchkes, and other pieces picked-up abroad. Personal items like grandma’s quilt or an heirloom blanket chest adds uniqueness and character that can’t be replicated.

Let Go of the Rules

Whimsy requires a willingness to loosen up but it doesn’t mean abandoning good design, it means redefining it – the home becomes a place for expression, imagination, and joy. Welcome in the quirky and add what makes you smile, instead of adding what pieces are expected of you.
